3rd of November 2006: MediaWiki update and Spam prevention
MediaWiki on OpenTom has been updated to Version 1.8.2.
From now on, only registered users with a verified e-mail address are allowed to create or edit pages. All users who have never edited a page have been deleted because the user database was flooded with fake accounts. If you have been affected by error, please accept my apologies and recreate your user.
Please report any problems with those new settings to tk@maintech.de. Thanks!
8th of August 2006: Pnr restored old contents of this page
Most of the useful content removed on June 16 by someone . I really hope we don't get into wiki wars here.
15th of February 2006: OpenTom release 0.0.3 and OpenTom MP3 Player update
This release features some smaller fixes and one big improvement:
- init, splash and dspmsg are now ONE and RIDER aware
This means the MP3 player also works on TomTom ONE. Sadly the RIDER lacks hardware support for sound, so there is no chance of a MP3 player. (questions about boot screen)
Edit: Only old models of TomTom ONE work. There is new Hardware Revision V2 on the market, that reboots infinitely.
Edit: Work Around TomTom ONE V2 and TomTom One V2 and TomTom One V3 and TomTom One V4 (currently in progress)
6th of February 2006: OpenTom MP3 player released
Today we released a first version of our MP3 player for the TomTom GO device family. Have a look at [1] for more information and download.
23rd of January 2006: 22C3 slides and paper released
If you're interested in the 22C3 slides and the paper, have a look at the maintech website. This stuff is German only - sorry, we promise to do all OpenTom related work in English in the future...
13th of January 2006: OpenTom release 0.0.2
Happy new year to all of you and happy new release for all of us :) Important changes:
- update to TomTom kernel 2.6.10-golinux-1008 (2.6.13 is in the works, 2.6.14 and newer will take some time because of major API changes)
- power button works
- the CoolSound driver now has an OSS emulation layer - /dev/dsp works like expected (mostly)
- Bluetooth initialisation is only done on devices that have BT
- USB switched to host mode
- webcam driver spca5xxx
- "rearview" webcam application as demonstrated during 22C3
- if there is a file called "app.tgz" in /opentom on the storage device (SD or HDD), it is unpacked to /tmp und a file called "app" is executed. This helps a lot when developing applications and building images including that application.
Thanks to the people who keep the Wiki clean
Even after Thomas changed most of the HTML-tags and value-names, bots seem to be able to go on rampage here. It is either that someone specifically edits the pages (or has built a bot specifically for opentom.org) or vandalism/spam-software is getting really sophisticated. Either way - it seems like there is no real way to prevent it besides of writing a new Wiki or starting to approve every user registration manually... So big thanks to the "small gods" who keep our Wiki clean and restore content on a regular basis.
January 2006: OESF forum attention OESF
A Sharp Zaurus owner got a Tom Tom Go 300 and discovered that it ran linux. Naturally, his first instinct was to see how quickly he could break it!
27th of December 2005: Hacking TomTom GO at 22C3
On 27th of December at 23:00, Christian and Thomas held a talk at the 22C3 in Berlin.
We also wrote a paper giving a summary on stuff that's documented here and even some new details about Rider and ONE.
Video from the talk is available here:

23rd of October 2005: OpenTom release 0.0.1
Finally we have our own build environment. So far it only runs on Linux, but it creates pretty clean images and should be a good starting point for your own projects. Please comment on it and submit your suggestions for improvement. The most interesting feature about this release is, that you can telnet into your GO via Bluetooth (GO 300, 500 and 700 only. Classic doesn't have BT). No need for a solder iron - you just get serial and TCP access...
Download stuff using the link above.
23rd of October 2005: Have a look at project OpenEZX
Our friend Harald Welte just started Project OpenEZX. This project is about Motorola's EZX phone platform, including the A780, E680 and E680i Linux based GSM Phones. There is a [OpenEZX wiki] where all the information collected so far can be found. You might want to have a look!
23rd of October 2005: Content duplication problems should be gone
While the changes I made last month to prevent further spam attacks seem to work fine, they introduced a bug that duplicated content when editing pages. This problem should be gone now.

2nd of September 2005: Massive spam attack
Today this wiki was target of a massive spam attack on almost all of it's pages. I had to make some changes to the wiki software to prevent further bot attacks. Please let me know if something doesn't work as it is meant to. Thanks!

Newsflash: proof-of-concept media player image
We offer a proof-of-concept media player image. It has no gui - in fact the only way to control it's behavior is the serial console. But it is based on mplayer and plays audio (pcm, mp3, ogg) and video (mpg, xvid) and perhaps some more. And it's really easy to install.
Oh... and in case you want to turn it off, better have a paper clip ready. (or you can just kill off mplayer and issue 'reboot' if you have serial access)
Doesn't work on a Tom Tom GO 300 - only white noise is heard.
