Openstreetmap and Tomtom

I'am a User Kartographer of Openstreetmap. My Idea (before Tomtom makes Mapshare) was a few Years ago to make a Navi Device lets you navigate like many People knows it now and additionaly lets you complete and edit existing and not existing Streets and Poi's. (Then came Openstreetmap and Mapshare;-)) Then when you have edit, you load your work to the OSM Server up and all the other People can also work with it. I think our Projekts are related to them other, so we should work together to make Tomtoms able to navigate with OSM Data and edit it when we see some incorrect ore icomplete Data. So, let's work together!

P.S.: you find Information about Openstreetmap by www.openstreetmap.org

MP3 player works on tomtom one

Is there any chance of some documentation for the sound driver in the kernel? We are very keen to get sound working when the TomTom software is run on the Sharp Zaurus using the Angstrom distribution Paul M - 20070630

I just want to confirm that the mp3 player is working nicely on my tomtom one. Only small thing is that the splash screen shows garbage.

Answer : To remove the splash screen garbage, look at OpenTom_release#TomTom_One_patch

Question: can you add a telnet over usb option?

Question: is it possible to run the original tomtom one application under your opentom kernel?

= MP3 player works on tomtom one BUT... The speed and heading information are not updated (always show 0) in GPS display. No accellerometer display exists. How to install TomTom_One_patch

Proof of Concept Media player problems

Proof of Concept Media player problems (Dec-03-2005) I downloaded the image, renamed it and tried to put files in a /media folder on the card. It boots up, but I just see an OpenTom Logo screen that is very distorted and I hear noise from the speaker. I tried with a .mpg video clip and with plain mp3 music files. I use a TomTom Go 300. Hint: TomTom released a new Software for the go recently (v.5.420), this changed the boot up ("insert card") screen, possibly they changed something in the boot loader / firmware making it incompatible with your work?

Improve Maps

28 NOV 2005

I'm trying to find a way to improve \ complement the road maps used by TomTom

We have very good digital maps of local roads that would be very useful to complement the existing network purcased from TeleAtlas

06 DEC 2005

I remember reading a story written by some of the guys here who've actually worked at TT.. IIRC they said that the format of the maps are TT's biggest secret. It's some kind of encrypted and compressed vector format I think. In other words: No, unfortunately it isn't possible to improve the maps.

I wish however that there were some kind of 'overlay' functionality (somewhat like google earth overlays) where you could add local enhancements and fixes. In my area, for example, none of the roads have the information necessary for letting TT know if it's a bicycle-only road, a private road, non-motor vehicle road, even one way roads are not marked. That makes for a lot of hassle and recalculations when I try to find my way around to some unknown address in an area.

500/700 BlueTooth and v2.0 phones

SEPT 21 2005

Sorry, this may be outside the scope of OpenTom's purpose ...

Many users of the TomTom Go 500/700 series have problems connecting to bluetooth-enabled SonyEricsson K750 or W800 phones for hands-free operation.

The problem, we believe, lies in the fact that the phones are bluetooth v2.0 compliant, while the TomTom is not. In the words of TT support, the bluetooth stack implementations may be incompatible. SonyEricsson claims backward compatibility.

For additional info, please see the following user forums:

Mobile-Review Forum Esato Forums [Esato Forums

Do you think that OpenTom is able to provide a bluetooth patch to enhance compatibility with v2 bluetooth, or specifically these phones?

That would be really awesome! Sorry if this is not the place to ask ...

At the time of writing (28 May 2007) my Tomtom Go 710 works fine with the SonyEricsson K800i phone. Maybe they fixed it already?
The only thing that might be improved is full bidirectional operation - however that may be another problem... Hiran

Installed v5.2beta on a Tomtom Rider : it works perfectly fine. I didn't install the necessary stuff to call it from a button. I will try this with the new v5.4beta version.

Hello, I have a Tomtom Rider and I plan to try to install EventLogger on it to keep traces from my rides and then provide GPX roadbooks. I'll let you know if I succeed to install and use it.

I have a question about the menu : on TTR (and maybe on GO), when you're moving, you only get a four buttons menu, instead of the normal six buttons menu. Does anyone know how to change the content of this specific menu ?

2005-11-21 Tomtom ONE

Wished to set in a new 1 GB SD on TT classic. Stored all files from the old SD and when trying to copy those files to the new SD, TT shows the red cross ( USB connected ). Also the taskbar freezes until I disconnect USB. Any ideas?

The Media-Player doesn't seem to work on a new TomTom Go 300. All i get ist an extreme loud white noise from the speaker. At first it boots with a progrees-bar and a penguin in the bottom-left corner, then comes your wiki.opentom.org-Screen and that awful noise. No matter weather i put an MP3 or an AVI into the "media"-Directory. Is that because of my new model TTG300 ? Can you help me please?

8 January 2006

I have a Tom Tom GO 300, bought in December 2005, and I too only get white noise with the media player - I put a VBR mp3 file into the media directory. This is how I discovered that there was a reset pin-hole, when I realised I didn't know how to stop it, and I didn't have the TTG300 connected to a computer!

Hi, What a great idea. I’ve managed to download file now, and the operating system works fantastically. There is a distinct lack of controls though. Are there any plans for future development of this idea? For instance are there any plans to enable the power switch? At the moment the only way I can turn my ttg off is to do a reset, am I missing something? Are there any plans to allow volume control? Is it likely that there will be a skip forward/skip back, pause, play functions on any further development? I had great problems, as appear to have had many other users, would it be helpful if I hosted the file on my own web-space for other potential users? All in all a great concept, one I will use even with its current shortfalls, but one I’m sure, with potential to be made better by users more skilled than me. Thanks to everyone involved to date. John

hello

I can not get this to work, I have done everything regarding formatting the card placing ttsystem in the root, creating media dir and placing mp3's into it. I have tried with putting one mp3 file into the media dir to see if it was not being read right but I still get the penguin and opentom screen and no music. thanks for any suggestions

Vincent.

just great i wtcht my firsr movies and mp3's i hope there will be a regular version with controlls soon.

thank you

Just tried this since I got a new SD Card for the regular maps and stuff. Works like a treat with mp3s, but mpegs were a bit too jerky, not enough processor oomph I guess. What's needed to take this further? Would be awesome with a UI. Killer app for the wired-into-car tomtom kit. Waiting expectantly!

12th July 2005

I would like to know if anyone knows the pinouts for the new Tomtom Go 300/500/700, as the connectors displayed on this site are for the Tomtom classic. I would like to do the radio mute and also night to headlights. If anyone has the permanent docking kit this would help!!! excellent site though.

Rolling demo script - 13 July 2005 - James

There's a curious demo "Script" folder - for sure on TTG 500/700. In this are a set of BMP screenshots and a file "demo.script". The neat bit looks like a photo/bitmap slideshow routine. It looks really useful... say, for family holiday snaps. (Ok, that's nearly as cool as an MP3 player). Anyway, what's not clear is if there's a way to kick this script (which i think you see on first use) into action.

[5th January 2005] - mysql_king RE: Rolling demo script - 5 January 2005 - mysql_king This file demo.script is used for shops to run a demo-script, a sort of commercial for in the showroom. In order to view the demo the file needs to be in the script folder. Go to main menu => change preferences => show version => tap on the clock The demo will now start.

It is little bit hidden on purpose, because, to get rid of the demo you will need to reset the GO!

Fantastic site, many thanks for the menu structure examples. I did find one problem, which I moved to the menu discussion page...

Cordsl [30 Jul 2005] Would it be possible to emulate a TTG in a windows environment? Without the gps antenna function ofcource,I think it is an easy way to try some things out, like custom menu's etc without having to change the sd-card from card-reader to TTG. Thanks you all for what is allready here!

(4th September) An idea! Would it be possible to display the output from the accelerometer on screen, similar to the dashboard of a Nissan Skyline GTR. An X Y graph with a peak hold would be great to see. A very interesting site by the way. Cheers...Scattronic

September 18th - Run TomTom on a linux PC - HOWTO? Hi Folks, I'm using TT on a Palm Tungsten T3, but I would like to build a linux PC into the car. I guess it should be possible to run TT on a normal PC running Linux? Has anybody done this before? Any pointers? Advice? Thank you!! --Lexje 23:14, 18 September 2005 (CEST)(Erwin - Lexje)

November 13th EVENT LOGGER

Hi Amacri, I am using your Event Logger software on my TT Classic. Also using ScaredyCats V5.202 and his programmes for TimeZone, AutoSwitcher etc.

Question 1 Will SC's TimeZone programme interfere with the recorded time in the itn file _logger? My recorded times always seem to be 2 hours behind local time no matter what changes I make to your script ttn. (ie TimeZone=UTC+2 etc).

Question 2 In the itn file _logger, viewed on the TT, I find valid entries with addresses but when I tap on the entry to 'Show on Map' the map does not centre on the actual place but somehere many miles away, -1 Lat 52 Lon. Further investigation of the map by zooming out shows a circle drawn at the expected point on the map. Is there some mod I (or you)could do, to make the map centre on the circle?

Further investigation on Nov 14 showed that the name of the place is recorded correctly in the itn file but the Lat and Lon are -1.00 and 52.00. The Lat and Lon are recorded correctly with the name of the place when I switch off. Strange!

Sample of my event log

0|0|Lunedì 14 novembre 2005|1|

0|0|Boot 14/11 11:28|2|

0|0|13:29 [-:0]|0|

-100000|5200000|13:30 164.5m* [-:0] High Street 13-23, Braunston (Northamptonshire)|0|

-120599|5229211|13:31 189.4m* [-:0] High Street 5-13, Braunston (Northamptonshire)|0|

0|0|Last mount failed: 14/11 13:34|0|

-120625|5229204|13:34 182.7m 5.0km/h [-:0] High Street 7-16, Braunston (Northamptonshire)|0|

Notice the lat/lon for Braunston is -1.20599 and 52.29211

Looks as if it is only reporting the units of the Lat and Lon in some instances

Many thanks for the great site and the software! cheer Bruce

Nov22 2005 Problem resolved by installing the correct version of 'expr' Thanks for help Amacri.

Ear phone for TomTom GO Classic

The GO has an option to choose "Walking routes". There is no way to connect a headphone or earpiece so when walking you need to have the volume up high enough to be heard above traffic. The sound can attract unwanted attention and is a security risk. There must be a way of connecting an external speaker via the base contacts but TomTom support were not helpful. Is there a relatively easy way to disable the built-in speaker and passing sound signals to an earpiece while TomTom GO is in my pocket or bag?

Reversing Camera Options

I am a little frustrated that the GO does not allow any video in for a reversing camera. Does anyone have any ideas about how to hack a video in signal for this purpose or maybe a bluetooth video feed?

Maybe even an interface to reversing sensors that display on the screen?

Compiling ScummVM under cygwin/Windows /crosscompiler on Linux (e.g. SuSE 10.1) for TomTomGo700

I like to compile ScummVM under cygwin/Windows for TomTomGo700 to play some old LucasArts games.

I have installed cyqwin and configured as mentioned in "Host cygwin Target ARM". After that i Have downloaded the ScummVM Source Code V.0.9.0.

After a ./configure i got the following error

$ ./configure Running ScummVM configure... Looking for C++ compiler... none found!

What's wrong here? What must I do to compile ScummVM successfully?

And furtheron what to do next? How to create the image so I could start it on TomTom? It's the first time for me using a cross-compiler for compiling for another architecture...

Please could someone help me? Thank you.

Thomas 07/18/2006

Update 07/20/2006 What I have achieved so far... First of all I got rid of the cygwin environment and switched to my real Linux Box :)

I have downloaded the build environment and the compiler toolchain. (OpenTom release 0.0.3 and cross-compiler) Then I did the configuration as mentioned on this project page. A "Hello World" Test-Compilation worked without any problems.

SDL-Lib

To get it to work with the toolchain you have also to download the SDL-Lib. (http://www.libsdl.org) Because it is not included :(

Set the cross-compiler variables like: export PATH="/usr/local/cross/gcc-3.3.4_glibc-2.3.2/bin:$PATH"

Additionally we have to set the LDFLAGS Variable, otherwise the Cross-compiler tries to built an ARM application with the X86 libraries what leads to rather ugly errors...

export LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/cross/gcc-3.3.4_glibc-2.3.2/bin

I have configured SDL with the following options:

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/cross/gcc-3.3.4_glibc-2.3.2/bin --host=arm-linux --target=arm-linux --disable-esd --disable-video-x11 --disable-x11-vm --disable-dga --disable-video-x11-dgamouse --disable-video-x11-xv --disable-video-x11-xinerama --disable-video-directfb

Please note: directfb did not work at the moment, so I disabled it. Maybe we could use it later because it is on the OpenTom Todo-List. Things we're currently working on:

After that I did a "make" and "make install". Now we have SDL support in our toolchain.

ScummVM 0.90

You can find the source code here: http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php#source

I configured it with the following options: ./configure --host=linupy --with-sdl-prefix=/usr/local/cross/gcc-3.3.4_glibc-2.3.2/bin/bin

Now ScummVM compiles without any errors.

After that I copied the application to my TomTom. I have started a Telnet Session over Bluetooth. After starting the Application I got the follwing error error while loading shared libraries: libSDL-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So I copied the libSDL-1.2.so.0 to the same directory where ScummVM resides. (I think ScummVM looks in the same directory for it. True? No go. Where I have to put this Lib in to get this work?

And last one a general question. What steps are necessary that the application is loaded automatically (like the OpenTom MP3PLayer) on TomTom startup?

How do I create an appropriate image for TomTom which is loaded on startup?

Any suggestions?

Thomas

Try running scummvm from within a shell script, and export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/directory/to/libsdl/ before scummvm. if you call this script "ttn" and place it in the root directory of your SD card or USB disk, it should automatically get run on boot. --Paulw 16:53, 7 January 2007 (CET)

I get the following error after starting scummvm on tomtom (and by the sdl test programs to):

Could not initialize SDL: Unable to open a console terminal!

'scummvm --help' works fine

Jan

You should configure the kernel with support for virtual console, and disable VGA console (compilation buggy).
Then you get another error:
WARNING: SDL_SetVideoMode says we can't switch to that mode (Couldn't set console screen info)!

SDL test programms work well in 320x240 mode, but fails for 320x200 mode even if it is given as supported by the video parameter test.

I have also triyed with the FMTOWNS release of zak, which natively runs on 320x240 but all I get is a segfault.
My guess is that the framebuffer driver is still buggy at the moment. Maybe directfb support will improve things.
But you should note that all scummvm ports rewrite the resolution to feet the hardware, so maybe we could write a port with a working resolution for the LCD
Another idea might be using directly x11 windowed mode, since I got nano-X running on my ONE, but with no touchscreen and, obviously, no keybord.. Toots 21:08, 23 July 2006 (CEST)
Finally!
Image:Monkey_TomTom_ONE.jpg
I had it using nano-X, scummvm and SDL compiled for nano-X!
Compilation is a bit tricky but quite OK.. And the game is running very well, but I cannot play since I have no keyboard and do not know if the touchscreen is supported by nano-X... Toots 03:13, 24 July 2006 (CEST)

Are the SDL test programms running (e.g. graywin) I get an error after running graywin or another testprogram

  • graywin -width 320 -height 240
  • Couldn't set display mode: No video mode large enough for 320x240
  • graywin -width 10 -height 10
  • Couldn't set display mode: No video mode large enough for 10x10
  • graywin -width 0 -height 0
  • Couldn't set 0x0x16 video mode: No video mode large enough for 320x240

whats the correct config for SDL i hav try this:

./configure --host=arm-linux --prefix=/xxx --exec-prefix=/xxx --enable-video-x11=no --enable-nanox-direct-fb=yes

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Question: Is the 910 compatible with non-TT maps/charts? I'd like to add some off-the-shelf marine charts to my 910. Seems to me it should be feasible - after all it's a linux box with a relatively large hard drive. Thanks.

It's not compatible with any other maps, yet ;) --Paulw 16:53, 7 January 2007 (CET)

Question2: How did you manage to compile scummvm for running under nano-X?. Could you post the configuration parameters, please? I don't know if you are aware, but in TomTomHeaven they have released a Nano-X compilation with touchpad support. May be we can now fully run ScummVM ? --Ignasiet 13:26, 31 January 2007 (CET)
